1. What is SouthPAC? The Southern Democratic Political Action Committee (SouthPAC) promotes common sense solutions for a better South, and a better America. We network with Democrats in states across the South and the nation and support Southern Democratic candidates. SouthPAC maintains an online presence at www.southerndemocrats.org. Read more About Us.
2. What are your goals for the current election cycle? Our goal during the year 2004 election cycle is to help Democrats retake the House of Representatives by supporting Southern Democratic candidates for Congress. Southerners deserve good Southern Democratic representation in Washington, and America deserves Democratic control of the House. Now is the time to give generously.
3. What is the SouthPAC policy platform? We support common sense solutions to build a better South and a better America. The South, the Congress and America have had enough of narrow policy platforms, Republican partisan wrangling and litmus test policymaking. We believe in increasing jobs, improving schools and strengthening families. We also believe in electing representatives who seek pragmatic, progressive solutions to issues while focusing on the concerns of their own communities and constituents. Read more about Issues.
4. Does SouthPAC work with other Democratic groups? SouthPAC strongly encourages you to support local, state and national Democratic groups and campaigns. SouthPAC is an additional resource to help tie together the interests and aims of Democrats across the South and the nation. We maximize the impact of campaign donations by targeting the most competitive races as they come down to the wire. We are a friend of other Democratic organizations, not in competition with them. We are not officially affiliated with any other organization.
5. Why should non-Southerners care about SouthPAC? Far too often, Democrats outside the South write off the importance of Southern Democrats due to cultural differences, occasional policy differences and strategic miscalculations. Simply put, Democrats need Southern Democrats. Southern Democrats are key to the national non-Southern Democrats: to the promotion of Democratic ideas in communities and states across the country, to the control of Congress, to the White House.
6. Which candidates does SouthPAC support? Right now we are focusing on Southern Democratic candidates for Congress who are viable candidates in close races. Read more about Canidadates. We do not officially endorse any candidates.
7. How can I make a difference? The simple fact is that it takes money to run a Congressional campaign. When you support the people instead of the special interests; you need the people to help fund your campaigns. You can help make a difference by helping us support Southern Democratic candidates through contributions to SouthPAC. Just log on to www.southerndemocrats.org and contribute through our secure system. It only takes a minute of your time.
8. How do I know this is above board? SouthPAC is a non-affiliated political action committee registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). We only accept hard-money contributions from individuals. We make quarterly filings of all activities with the FEC, and our Treasurer is an expert in campaign finance law with a track record of fair dealing and dedication to public service.
9. Why is the donkey the mascot of the Democratic Party? Glad you asked. This is a great story about a great Southern Democrat. The Democratic Donkey mascot dates back to 1828 and one of our best Southern Democratic Presidents, Tenneessee's own Andrew Jackson. His opponents tried to label him a "jackass" for his slogan, "Let the people rule." Jackson picked up on their name calling and turned it to his own advantage by using the donkey on his campaign posters.
